    Hi everyone! Juliana here, welcome back. Is there any better time to talk about dog training than the season of Back to School? This quarter, while students and teachers are heading back to the classroom, we are going to talk about how to take our own dog training — and teaching — to the next level.

    The 3 D’s” is a term thrown around a lot in dog training. Most of us know what the 3 D’s stand for: distance, duration and distraction, but we can all benefit from a deeper look into each term.

    When we teach a dog a behavior and then proof that behavior with the 3 D’s, we are strengthening it to a level of real world fluency — something most dog owners want!

    To review, here is a general overview of the 3 D’s from two different experts:

    Now to dive into each of those training concepts individually:

    DISTANCE: Smart Dog University tells us how to build distance into a behavior. For this example, she uses “stay”:

    DURATION: Building duration helps with skills like impulse control, as well as general proofing. Karen Pryor Clicker Training explains how to build duration with an existing behavior:

    DISTRACTION: One of the most common dog owner complaints that I hear is a dog not responding to the owner outside with as much focus or attention as he would when inside the house. As trainers, we know that dogs are not being “stubborn,” they simply have not had enough practice around distractions. This video by That Dog Geek gives step-by-step tips for building behavior around distractions:

    Teaching a new behavior is only half the battle. Getting lasting results means taking your training up a notch and teaching behaviors that are strong and reliable. The 3 D’s are the best way to get there.
