Fall is a good time to be in California! This September, ten behavior residents had the opportunity to attend a week-long course focused on food animal behavior and welfare hosted and organized by Dr. Melissa Bain DACVB, DACAW at UC Davis. The residents had the opportunity to learn from members of the UC Davis food animal faculty and industry experts on topics related to Beef, Dairy, Poultry and Small Ruminant Behavior and Welfare through lectures and hand on visits to local producer’s facilities. On the final day of the course, Jennifer Walker, DVM, Ph. D, from Dean Foods, was on hand to talk about Animal Welfare Audits of Dairy Farms in the morning and a trip to the UC Davis Meats Processing Facility (Abattoir) wrapped up the course in the afternoon. Overall a great experience with much learned by all.
